UPS made history this week with the first revenue-generating drone deliveries at WakeMed’s flagship hospital campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.
With the help of their partner, Matternet Inc., UPS is now delivering medical samples via unmanned drone across WakeMed’s campus.
The daily flights are sanctioned by the Federal Aviation Administration and the NCDOT under a program to speed implementation of drone use in public settings.
Logistics can play a role in helping hospitals improve patient care while operating more efficiently, and UPS is leading the way. They first partnered with the Vaccine Alliance and Zipline International Inc. in 2016 to deliver blood products across rural Rwanda, and WakeMed shows the urban applications as well. The WakeMed deliveries by drone take 3 minutes, versus 30+ minutes by couriers in cars. That, in turn, reduces the time doctors need to diagnose and treat patients — improving both patient care and hospital efficiency.
